During a recent studio walk beneath a canopy of ancient ginkgo trees, we found ourselves meditating on the dual nature of autumn peace. On one hand, there is the majestic, solitary beauty of a single ginkgo leaf, standing firm and elegant against the changing sky. On the other hand, there is the quiet warmth of ginkgo leaves falling in pairs, drifting together onto the damp earth.

It occurred to us that our own lives inhabit these same two rhythms: the quiet strength of solitude and the gentle comfort of companionship. Notes from the Studio Workbench: The Art of Wax-Resist Glazing

Bringing the fan-shaped silhouette of the ginkgo leaf onto a ceramic vessel requires a process that honors traditional pottery craft. If you were to visit our studio during production, you would see our workbench filled with smooth, unfired stoneware clay vessels awaiting glaze.

For this piece, we turned to the traditional wax-resist glazing technique. Before any glaze touches the vessel, our artisans meticulously hand-brush liquid wax onto the raw stoneware surface, tracing the distinct silhouettes of the ginkgo leaves.

Once the wax dries, the entire 12oz stoneware mug is dipped into our signature Vanilla Ice glaze—a warm, creamy off-white hue infused with delicate, organic speckles. The liquid glaze naturally repels off the wax-coated silhouettes, adhering only to the exposed surrounding stoneware clay.

When the vessel enters the high-heat environment of our studio kiln, the wax layer burns away completely in the fire. What emerges from the kiln is an exquisite visual and tactile contrast: a silky, smooth Vanilla Ice speckled body punctuated by an exposed, raw terracotta stoneware clay silhouette. The surface remains smooth and flat, offering an honest, unadorned contrast between creamy glaze and raw matte clay.

One Mug, Two Autumn Moods: The Dual-Sided Ginkgo Story

To honor the two quiet moods of the season, we crafted a dual-sided botanical narrative on a single stoneware vessel:

• The Front (70mm x 70mm): Centered on the main face of the mug, a single large fan-shaped ginkgo leaf silhouette expands upward from near the base. Measuring 70mm by 70mm, this prominent motif captures the serene elegance and independent strength of solitude.
• The Back (30mm x 30mm): As you turn the vessel around, a pair of small ginkgo leaves floats softly together in the lower right corner. Measuring 30mm by 30mm, this subtle corner detail represents quiet companionship—a gentle reminder of shared warmth tucked right where your thumb rests while holding the handle.
