Inspiration & Olfactory Memory: The Lingering Scent of Autumn Oak Groves
There is a profound, almost mystical connection between scent and memory. Long before our conscious minds process the arrival of autumn, our sense of smell registers the shift. The crisp, damp aroma of fallen oak leaves, the woody scent of drying bark, and the distinct, earthy fragrance of acorns resting on moist soil hold a unique key to our emotional memory. In neuroscience, this is often called the Proustian effectβthe way an aroma can instantly bypass logic and transport us back to quiet childhood walks, woodland sanctuaries, and moments of unhurried peace.
During a recent studio walk through a nearby oak canopy, it was this rich olfactory memory that inspired our newest creation. As we brushed aside crisp leaves to find small acorns tucked into the earth, we were reminded of the famous old adage:Β "Great oaks from little acorns grow." There is immense comfort in that phrase. It reminds us that every grand harvest, every deep transformation, and every meaningful habit in our lives begins quietly, as a small seed planted in patience.
At ROOT24STUDIO, we wanted to capture both the aromatic nostalgia of autumn oak groves and the tactile comfort of slow craft, bringing them together in a vessel designed for your morning ritual.
Notes from the Studio Workbench: The Art of Wax-Resist Glazing
If you were to visit our studio as the autumn weather turns crisp, you would find our workbench lined with smooth, unfired stoneware vessels waiting for glaze. Translating the delicate anatomy of oak leaves and acorns onto raw stoneware requires a process that honors traditional pottery craft.
For this piece, we turned to the classic wax-resist glazing technique. Before any glaze touches the clay, our artisans meticulously hand-apply a liquid wax resist onto the stoneware surface, tracing the silhouettes of oak leaves and acorns.
Once the wax sets, the entire 12oz stoneware mug is dipped into our signatureΒ Vanilla Ice glazeβa warm, creamy hue infused with delicate, organic speckles that evoke the soft mist of an autumn morning. The liquid glaze naturally repels off the wax-coated silhouettes, adhering only to the surrounding stoneware clay.
When the vessel enters the high-heat environment of our studio kiln, the wax layer burns away completely in the fire. What emerges from the kiln is an exquisite visual and tactile contrast: a silky, smooth Vanilla Ice speckled body punctuated by an exposed, raw terracotta stoneware clay silhouette. There are no artificial paints or heavy carvings hereβjust the honest, raw beauty of exposed stoneware clay meeting creamy glaze.

One Mug, Two Autumn Moments: The Dual-Sided Acorn Story
To reflect the full journey of autumn, we crafted a dual-sided botanical narrative on a single stoneware vessel:
- The Front (60mm x 85mm): Centered on the main face of the mug, two fully expanded oak leaves cradle a ripe acorn hanging from the branch. Standing 60mm tall by 85mm wide, this motif captures the vibrant, golden fullness of the autumn canopy hanging on the treeβa celebration of growth, potential, and seasonal abundance.
- The Back (40mm x 30mm): As you turn the vessel around, a single fallen acorn with a small twig rests softly in the lower right corner. Measuring 40mm by 30mm, this subtle corner detail represents ground-level discoveryβa quiet, fallen treasure tucked right where your thumb rests while holding the handle.
One side celebrates the grand beauty of the oak canopy above; the other side holds the quiet joy of finding a fallen acorn on the earth below. One mug, two gentle autumn moments.

Tactile & Sensory Mindfulness: Reclaiming 1 Hour of Stillness in Harvest Season
In a world that constantly demands speed, taking time for sensory mindfulness is a vital form of self-care. Pairing tactile stoneware with olfactory grounding creates a deeply restorative morning ritual.
As you wrap your hands around the warm stoneware vessel, your fingers move across the subtle contrast: from the silky, smooth touch of the Vanilla Ice glaze to the matte, earthy texture of the unglazed terracotta silhouette. As you breathe in the rich, steaming aroma of freshly brewed coffee, spiced apple cider, or loose-leaf tea, your sense of smell and touch work together to quiet your nervous system and anchor you in the present moment.
We advocate for reclaiming 1 hour out of your 24 to enjoy uninterrupted stillness. Step away from digital notifications, hold warm clay, and savor the quiet scents of the season.
