There are days on the calendar meant for simple celebration, and then there are days meant for profound reflection. June 19thβJuneteenthβis the latter.
As a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of resilience, liberation, and the enduring strength of the Black community. At ROOT24STUDIO, as we continue our journey of learning and listening, we are taking a step back today from the usual noise of commerce to honor the true weight of this day.
The Profound Privilege of a Pause
In our studio, we speak often about the philosophy of reclaiming one hour out of your 24. We talk about slow living as a way to combat the modern burnout of our daily lives.
But as we observe Juneteenth, we are humbled by a deeper truth:Β The ability to choose to rest is a profound privilege.

Historically, for enslaved people, the ownership of one's time and the right to rest were brutally denied. Labor was forced, and stillness was stolen. Therefore, the simple, quiet act of restingβof closing one's eyes in the shade, of sitting undisturbed with a warm cup in handβis not just a wellness practice. For the Black community, and for all who honor this day of liberation, rest is a radical act of freedom. It is a reclaiming of humanity.
Gathering Around the Table: Witnesses to Storytelling
Juneteenth has always been a day of gathering. It is marked by cookouts, vibrant community gatherings, and the passing down of history from elders to the next generation.
In these moments, the tables we set and the vessels we hold become silent witnesses to the storytelling. When family and friends gather around a warm, inviting table to share a meal, or when they pour deeply hued hibiscus teaβa traditional red drink symbolizing resilience and joyβinto their mugs, they are doing more than just drinking. They are connecting. They are sustaining the heartbeat of a community.
We are reminded today that the objects in our homes should serve this greater purpose: to anchor us, to bring us together, and to hold our shared histories.

A Quiet Hour of Reflection
Today, we are not asking you to shop. We are simply inviting you to use your 1-hour sanctuary differently.
If you have the time today, we encourage you to pause and lean into the spirit of Juneteenth:
-
Listen and Learn:Β Spend your quiet hour reading a book by a Black author, or listening to voices that illuminate the Black experience in America.
-
Support Community:Β Discover and support local Black-owned independent businesses, artists, and creators who bring so much beauty to our world.
-
Embrace the Rest:Β Sit quietly in a comfortable chair, feel the sunlight, and cultivate a deep sense of gratitude for the freedom to breathe, to pause, and to own your time.
May we all continue to walk toward a future where freedom, peace, and the right to rest are universally shared.
With deep respect and quiet reflection,
β Olivia Been & The ROOT24STUDIO Team
